Since 1915, Moe's has been a fixture on the University of Michigan's central campus. Back then, it was known as George J Moe Sport Shop. It served as a full-service sporting goods store where you could get everything...golf clubs, ski boots, bowling balls, ice skates, baseball gloves, and even the required freshman "beanie" caps!
In 1971, the business was bought by Edwin J "Bud" VanDeWege, who shaped and guided the store to become the wonderful Michigan tradition it is today. Under the VanDeWege family, the store grew and became the premier Michigan apparel store on campus. In 1992, Bud VanDeWege, Jr and family came on board to take over store operations and growth.
Recently, the baton has been passed to Ryan Gregg and Rishi Narayan, owners of Underground Printing. Founded in 2001 in a West Quad dorm room by these college students and childhood friends, UGP is custom screenprinting and embroidery apparel maker serving the campus and local community, and today UGP continues to specialize in custom printed garments with locations throughout the nation.
But as Michigan Alumni, Ryan and Rishi know the value of tradition. Moe's will continue to be Moe's, the place to go for premier Michigan merchandise on campus. Stop in to shop, check out the memorabilia from yesteryear, and possibly catch Bud Jr. hanging out in the store!
